RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HEALING GASTROINTESTINAL REFLUX DISEASE (GERD)

Most important things that have helped me:

1. Avoiding eating 3 hours before bed.

2. Avoiding trigger foods

3. Eating a simple, healing diet, and eating small meals.

5. Sitting down to eat, not rushing, and relaxing.

6. Conscientiously taking my herbs (1 – 3 grams of “Refluxan”, mix with a small amount of warm water, and drink before meals), and HCL (1 capsule in the MIDDLE of the meal) with every meal, and using DGL (deglycerized licorice powder – about 1/8 of a tsp, chewing it, mixing with saliva before swallowing) when needed if I am having any discomfort after or between meals.

7. Understanding that stress and poor eating habits have caused this problem.

8. Being patient and realizing that it takes time for the damage to heal, and that I will get the symptoms back whenever I go back to old habits (overeating, lying down after eating, eating when rushed and stressed, eating sugar, chocolate, spicy, fatty foods, and caffeine).

Healing Diet:

Oatmeal with cooked raisins, rice mike, bananas. Cooked grains, including brown rice, millet, and quinoa. Avoiding gluten (wheat, barley, spelt, rye.) Lots of steamed vegetables (wide variety), some salads (but avoiding raw onions, vegetables with a lot of cellulose, tomato.)
Bland diet (spicy triggers the reflux and burning.) Plenty of protein, but easy to digest. Cutting back on dairy.

Trigger foods: Acidic things including tomatoes (including tomato sauce), garlic, (includes hummus unfortunately), pepper (restaurants like to add this!!), sugar, chocolate, tea and coffee, fried foods, fruit juices, lots of dairy, citrus fruit, peppermint, alcoholic beverages.

Drink plenty of liquids, warm tea, water, not ice cold. Do self-massage to abdomen and stomach, relaxing the muscles in that area. Getting acupuncture, meditating, or doing some other calming activity. Getting in touch with my feelings, so that I know what is creating the stress. Deciding not to rush around and over schedule my life is a really big one for me.
